Winery Spotlight: Fat Ass Ranch Winery & Brewery

As part of our winery spotlight this month, we are going to feature Fat Ass Ranch Winery & Brewery in Fredericksburg TX. One of many wineries along the 290 Wine Trail, Fat Ass is conveniently located along the historic Highway 290 Wine Corridor.

With three tasting rooms throughout the Fredericksburg area, you have your pick of places to try out some local wine and beer. There’s a winery and brewery on the Highway 290 Wine Corridor, and a tasting room downtown. No reservations are required, so what are you waiting for? Here’s a closer look at the story of Fat Ass.

You can read the full story on their website, but in a nutshell, Fat Ass was the dream of founders Gail and Jennie McCulloch who came up with this whimsical name for their winery in a moment of humor when they realized their donkey, Jackson, was growing as sturdy as the horses.

Gail and Jennie’s vision has always been rooted in the joy of sharing. They wanted their winery to be remembered as a place where everyone felt like family, and where the wine flowed freely along with the stories. This passion for winemaking made Fat Ass Ranch Winery & Brewery a must-see destination in Texas Hill Country.

The adventure is still evolving as Fat Ass Ranch pays tribute to the legacy of Gail and Jennie, commemorating their humor, spirit, and dedication to quality. Carrying on that legacy means carrying on a platform where tradition meets innovation, and where every guest becomes a memorable part of the Fat Ass family.

The winery is located at 1 Elgin-Behrends Road in Fredericksburg. It’s a first come, first served establishment, with no reservations needed. However, you will need a reservation when booking the 3 High Class Fat Ass Silos, where you can enjoy tasty local wine in the exclusive outside covered patio. Within the winery itself, soak up the knowledge of local wine from the friendly and knowledgeable staff, serving you the Fat Ass’ featured award-winning wines with complimentary logo glasses you can keep. Fat Ass Tastings are just $15 per person. Hours for the winery are:

• Sunday-Thursday 11am-5pm
• Friday 11am-6pm
• Saturday 10am-6pm

Bridal parties are always welcome. The bride-to-be will receive a free tasting when all other members of the party buy a wine or beer tasting. There are also Saturday Specials ($30) that feature a tasting, tram ride through the vineyard to the brewery and back, complimentary frozen sangria, and more.

This one-of-a-kind brewery is your source for incredible on-tap craft brews that include:

• Blonde Ale
• Peach Wheat
• The American Lager
• Amber
• IPA

Choose from pints, growlers, flights, and cans. Hours are Saturday 10am-6pm, Thurs/Fri/Sun/Mon 11am-5pm, and closed Tuesday & Wednesday. It’s located across the vineyard from the winery at 11602 US-290 in Fredericksburg. No reservations are needed.

Head downtown to experience the tasting room at 153 E Main Street in Fredericksburg. Hours are Sunday-Thursday 11am-5pm, Friday 11am-6pm, and Saturday 10am-6pm, with no reservations needed. Enjoy tasting five of their featured award-winning wines with a complimentary logo glass you can keep. Fat Ass Tastings on Main are just $10 per person.
